Since opening Photo Restorations of Cincinnati in 1989, I have copied and restored photographs from just about every photographic process known. And, despite the late 20th and early 21st century ushering in the digital age and with it the gradual death of the wholesale copy and restoration industry, I have maintained a standing archive of almost 100,000 negatives from this extremely high volume of restoration work spanning 15 years.
Recently, I have begun culling this archive to a more manageable size, pulling out what I thought the most interesting images and digitizing them for storage. Dating as far back as 1849, the originals, from which these negatives were made, represent a history of the photographic process. More importantly, they represent a real sense of Americana through the eyes of everyday people.
Despite having restored most of these images, I've decided to show this small sampling in their original condition as a reminder that sometimes we have to accept the fact that everything in life ages.
